From its inception, Overstory (the parent company behind Wayfinder Winery & Farm in Western Australia’s Margaret River region) set a bold direction for the estate’s future: independence and resilience through clean energy. Central to this philosophy was a commitment to integrating 100% renewable energy generation and usage across the entire winery development.
Recognising the scale and ambition of this objective, Overstory engaged Unlimited Energy Australia (UEA) in 2022 to lead a comprehensive pre-feasibility study into renewable energy options. Over the next two years this work progressed into a full feasibility study, defining the optimal scale and configuration of the site’s Solar PV and Battery Energy Storage System to support the estate's operations.
Turning Vision into Infrastructure
In 2024, Valtari Construction was awarded the tender to build the winery facility. During this stage UEA collaborated with Valtari, KHA Studio and Best Consultants to deliver a Stage 1 detailed design and documentation report for the renewable energy component.
In December 2024, Valtari appointed Innovative Energy Systems, a specialist in renewable and electrical system delivery, to install the renewable energy system.
The System
The engineered solution for Wayfinder includes:
302 kW / 300 kW Solar PV array
240 kW / 240 kWh German designed and manufactured Tesvolt Battery Energy Storage System
The system provides reliable, clean power capable of supporting the estate's operations across vineyard, winery and hospitality functions.
Commissioning and the Road Ahead
UEA’s engineered renewable energy hub was successfully commissioned in November 2025, marking a major milestone in Wayfinder’s long term sustainability roadmap.
The client’s vision extends well beyond Stage 1:
Wayfinder intends to expand the renewable energy system over time, with the clear goal of operating entirely off grid and reducing backup generator reliance to a minimum.
About Wayfinder Winery & Farm
Located in the heart of the renowned Margaret River wine region, Wayfinder is part of Overstory’s broader mission to create a place focused on sustainability in all its forms. This commitment to sustainability goes beyond energy, reflecting a holistic approach to land care, winemaking and long-term environmental stewardship.
The Wayfinder Winery & Farm project will be completed in time for vintage in early 2026, with the cellar door and restaurant opening by mid-2026.
